Christ Cathedral – Arboretum | Glendale, CA
Aeolian Skinner Opus 1141 was designed, installed and personally reviewed by G. Donald Harrison in the First Church of Christ Scientist in Beverly Hills in 1948. The original installation was heavily chambered in a very dry room. When that church suffered irreparable damage in the 1993 Northridge earthquake the organ was sold to the Crystal Cathedral and installed in the Arboretum in 1996.
The Arboretum organ is known as The Fred Swann Organ, so designated by the Cathedral during Fred Swann's tenure as Organist at Schuller's Crystal Cathedral because he was instrumental in obtaining the organ for the Cathedral. The instrument was extensively cleaned and refurbished in 2014 when the sanctuary was restored, updated, and reconfigured for use in the Catholic mass.
The instrument is placed in the front of the sanctuary. Solo, Choir, Swell and Echo divisions are under expression. Swell is in the 3 bays on the bottom, Choir in the 2 on the top right, and Solo in the one on the left. Great is front and center, with Pedal stops on the left and right. This landmark Aeolian Skinner encompasses 82 ranks of pipes. There are several digital stops, which have been emulated using samples from other parts of the instrument, in order to closely match the current installation.
We have just finished work on a significant upgrade of the Evensong Christ Cathedral Arboretum Aeolian Skinner sample set. This iconic IV/82 instrument was first released by CLR Resources as a Hauptwerk IV sample set in 2016. We have returned to the original recordings and completely rebuild the sample set from scratch. The result is a much improved sample set. An example recording of it is here.
The recording was done in the native acoustic, which is warm and quite live, the new noise reduction and inclusion of the remote perspective captures this very well.
Encryption
The samples are offered in 48kHz/24bit resolution. The multiple releases have 3 levels: short, mid and long. Hauptwerk 5 and higher required (incl. HW6/7). The sample set is encrypted via the iLok system used in Hauptwerk
The sample set is offered in a 4-channel variant (Close-Ambient)
Reverb time
The reverb time is up to 1.5~2 seconds.
Keyboards, pedalboards
The original compass: keyboards - 61 notes, pedal division - 32 notes. There are some 73-note ranks, which are faithfully sampled
Requirements
RAM consumption (2-channel)
- 16-bit compressed, all releases, single loops: 12 GB
- 24-bit, compressed, all releases, single loops: 18 GB
Acknowledgements
Thanks to Christoph Schmitz for his excellent work on the screens of this set, and to Phil Riddick for voicing assistance, and to the dedicated beta testers including David McCallister.
The stoplist of the sample set is listed below. The stops in italics were generated using samples from other parts of the instrument, emulating stops that are digital in the current installation, or extending the stoplist to make it more versatile
